Clinical Observation of Suspected Typhoid Fever Patients

Abstract
Clinical observation of suspected typhoid fever patients was done with 1,365 admitted cases in 1972 and following results were obtained.
1. Finally 1, 205 cases were diagnosed a typhoid fever at the time of discharge by clinical observation or laboratory studies.
2. Fatality rate was 2.6% with 31 cases expired during admission.
3. In age and sex distributions, high frequencies were noted in twenties in male and female groups together.
4. Seasonal distribution was observed. Though most frequent distribution was noted in August but it continued all over the year.
5. Symptomatolegical study found that mental confusion, psychic excitement, neuritis symptoms, and cough were not uncommon.
6. Frequency orders of complications were melena, intestinal perforation, septic shock and meningo encephalitis.
7. Direct causes of death in typhoid fever were analyzed. Frequency orders were septic shock, mening oencephalitis, intestinal perforation and melena.
8. Non-typhoid cases were observed. Fever unknown origin, upper respiratory infection, pulmonary tuberculosis and colitis were frequent diseases observed.
9. Initial widal titer at the time of admission were as follows >640X: 63%, >320X: 81.8%, >160 X: 91.5%. It indicated that value of initial widal titer is still remarkable.
10. Average admission dates were 14.6 days.
11. Average onset were 13.4 days.
12. Average duration of febrile stage after chloramphenicol administration per os was 3.8 days.
13. Salmonella typhi was isolation in 248 patients by rectal swab that positive culture rate was 20.5%.
